Celebrating Women in Optimised Energy

Celebrating International Women's Day 2022

Across our offices, we've been very busy celebrating the women in Optimised Energy and breaking the bias for this year's International Women's Day.

Our Ashby office took part in a the local 5km park run, held especially for International Women's Day, while our teams competed in an Optimised Bake Off on Tuesday morning, with Bristol's Natalie Maggs (who you will meet below) coming out on top with some lovely Easter-themed cupcakes.

How are our women breaking the bias?

To celebrate International Women’s Day this B Corp Month, we interviewed some of our amazing female employees, Natalie Maggs, Section Head - Bureau, Debbie Gregson, Section Head - Cost Recovery, and Carla Wilson, Senior Project Manager for Engineering, about their experiences in the energy industry.

Could you tell me a bit about your role in the energy industry and what you enjoy about it?

Carla

"I head up the energy engineering team. My role involves managing projects on site and remotely, which can range from CHP installations through to metering contracts or energy and BeMS audits. It's quite a varied role and I liaise with a lot of the divisions within Optimised and work across numerous sectors. I enjoy that no two days are the same.

I enjoy the variety of it, and I enjoy the fact that we get a positive outcome because we help our clients actively reduce their energy consumption through our projects."

"I've worked in energy my whole career. Since leaving university, all my jobs have been energy-based. I think you'll probably get a similar answer from anyone you ask - most people fall into energy. It was never my planned destination, but it's where I ended up. It’s such a huge industry, so it never stays the same from day to day, it's recession-proof and it's changing all the time.

There's always something new to learn so you're never bored, and you're never stuck in the same place. There's so many different directions you can go with it. As an industry to work in, it's very interesting, it's a safe job, and it's always worked well for me. You can sort of find your niche in it and I feel like that's what I've done."

Debbie

Natalie

"Yeah, I definitely agree. I think everyone falls into energy, don't they? When I started, I didn't know what anything was really, like a meter or a bill, so I went from knowing nothing about it to where I am now. In my role, I also really enjoy the variability of it - every day is different. I don't do the same thing day in and day out. It keeps you on your toes because everything's always changing in the industry. You're constantly learning as well, which is nice, rather than being stagnant.

Also, I think a lot more people are interested in energy now. When you compare when I started 10/12 years ago to the energy market now, everyone's talking about it and the impact it's having. So, it's definitely more at the forefront of everyone's mind, whereas in the past it was more at the back."

Do you feel like you've had to face any challenges working in a male-dominated industry?

Carla

"The engineering team is predominantly a team of men, and a lot of my industry colleagues are also men. Fortunately for myself, my personality helps me work in a male-dominated environment because I’m naturally quite confident. It can be quite intimidating sometimes when you go into a room of engineers and they're all men and you're the only woman there, and obviously being a younger woman as well, sometimes it is quite hard to get taken seriously.

So, I think it's about building that credibility and getting people to take you seriously. I've battled for probably 10 years in my career now to get to the point where I am. I consider myself a good project manager, not just because I'm a woman, but because of my skill set. I think they're very fair at Optimised. They don't discriminate against women, and I think they give equal opportunities to both sexes."

"It does seem like it's a very male-dominated industry. But it's never been the case in my experience. It's always been quite 50:50 at Optimised Energy. For me, in my career to this point, I don't think it's ever been an issue. I've always progressed and been supported on my merits. Nobody's held me back because I'm a woman. I don't feel like men have been put into positions that should have been mine.

I've got to the position that I'm at because I'm very good at my job and I've always been supported. I do feel differently now that I'm a mum. I feel like since I've come back, I have to prove that I'm still committed to my career and that I haven't given up because I want to have a family. I think that most of that is coming from inside my own brain."

Debbie

Would you like to see any policy changes to further support working mums?

"No not really. To be honest, it's been a real positive mark on the company, the way that they've treated me. When I was pregnant, when I was off, and now I've come back, they've been really flexible with me. There isn't any kind of message that now I'm part-time, I’ll be demoted.

There's been a lot of support on that side of things. In terms of my manager, my structure, my day-to-day working, I don't feel like being a woman and being a working mother is holding me back. And Optimised introduced new parental policies shortly before I finished, so I was quite lucky!"

Debbie

Carla

"Yeah, they've really supported me in terms of flexible working, because I've got two small children, and even before the flexible working policy came on board, I already managed to negotiate a four-day working week as part of my contract. It's not frowned upon if you have to leave work because of childcare.

I speak on behalf of some of the men within the company as well: it's not just the women that benefit from it. Men can now finish at 3 o'clock and go and do the school pick up and then come back and log back on later. So, I think that's it's really good for both."

Do you have any advice for women who are thinking about working in this industry or in management roles like yourselves?

Natalie

"I think if you want to do it, don't be put off by it being a male-dominated industry or being told that you can't do it if you think you can. Don't give in, just keep going."

"I would say that the industry isn’t as male-dominated as people may think, because there's such a variety of roles that suit males or females. The industry itself is very complex, with roles ranging from data analysis to carbon accounting. I think there are a lot of opportunities that can be suited to anybody."
