How does Optimised Energy give back to the community?

Having a positive impact on your community is central to using business as a force for good. As part of the B Corp certification, we report against the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using these to reflect on our broader purpose and ensure we positively impact and give back to our community. Last year, our team contributed towards the following SDGs through volunteering and fundraising initiatives:

Boxes of Hope

Our colleague Mark Earnshaw made the most of the Optimised Energy’s volunteering policy, taking a day’s paid leave to contribute to Boxes of Hope in Cumbria. The project depended on the kindness and generosity of volunteers, supported by local schools and churches. Despite complications due to Brexit and the pandemic, 9,245 shoeboxes filled with toys, pencils and paper, sweets, toiletries and clothes were delivered to children living in abject poverty in Romania – in time for Christmas. Since 2013, Boxes of Hope have sent over 90,000 shoeboxes and donations of over £75,000 to projects that run all year round.

Optimised Grand Tour

Last year, Optimised Energy took part in a “Grand Tour” challenge to raise £1,000 for Mind, a mental health charity. Participants had to collaboratively travel the total distance between all 5 of the Optimised offices (919 miles) over a six-week period by walking, running or cycling.

This target was smashed within 2 weeks, and the donation was upped to £2,000 if they could hit 6,000 miles, the distance between the UK and South Africa where the Group has had temporary offices. Thanks to everyone’s hard work, competitive drive and help from Bluestone Fitness in Ashby de la Zouch, the participants achieved this goal.

Wolf Run

Following the success of the Grand Tour, Optimised Energy took part in the Autumn Wolf Run to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, a UK-based charity funding research to improve cystic fibrosis care, treatment and support. This 10km assault course pushed our staff to the limit, seeing them run, climb, crawl and swim across challenging and varied terrain. The participants managed to raise an impressive £3,025 of donations from family, friends and colleagues.

Volunteering with Samaritans

Our colleague Cian O’Donnell spent his paid volunteering day with Samaritans, a helpline service and charity specialising in mental health and suicide prevention. Cian helped the charity shop in Blackpool prepare for their post-lockdown reopening, before finishing his day with a shift on the main telephone service, lending an ear to those who needed urgent support.

We look forward to finding new ways to positively impact our community and challenge you to do the same!
