One Of Our Team Answers The Call
Optimised Energy’s Cian O’Donnell supports those in need with Samaritans.
As a volunteer with the local Samaritans branch, Cian O’Donnell decided to use his annual company ‘charity day’ to help preparing the charity shop for its reopening before completing a shift on the main telephone helpline service.
“I think in some shape or form, we have all witnessed some challenging times with mental health, particularly over the last year. Our volunteers have been doing trojan work behind the scenes. So, it was great to lend a hand for a day in the shop, it’s not normally a side I get to see.”
Who are the Samaritans?
The Samaritans were the worlds very first telephone helpline service. Setup to help with suicide prevention and mental health, today they are made up of 20,000 volunteers from over 200 branches across UK and Ireland.
Every 6 seconds someone calls the Samaritans, and here they are offered a safe place to talk with one of their specially trained listening volunteers. They can be contacted any time on their freephone 116 123.
Mental Health
Just like physical health, we all must look after our mental health. It has been well publicised that suicide is sadly the leading cause of death for men under 50, which even though Optimised Energy are 45% women, this makes up a large demographic of the industry which we work in.
The Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Samaritans
Operating out of Blackpool town centre since 1978, the Samaritans branch has seen a lot of change, but the core objectives remain the same. With around 100 active volunteers, each helping to answer calls from those in need. As it is a self-funded branch, the shop has been essential for its survival.
It costs £147 per day to operate the branch, and under it’s recent ‘Pay for a Day’ initiative, companies such as Optimised Energy have been able to support the running costs for their chosen days.
