Celebrating Women in STEM

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science celebrates those working and thriving in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) careers.

Optimised has many phenomenal women as part of teams across the business. Women with STEM skills are essential to Optimised operations and we couldn’t deliver award-winning services without them!

We chatted with some of our excellent women, to learn about what led them into their current roles.

Carla Wilson joined Optimised as an Energy Engineer back in 2017. Six years on, Carla has a seat on our Senior Leadership Team, as Director of our Consulting services. Where did it all start?

From a young age, I have always been interested in technology and maths, and understanding how and why things work the way they do. I am a natural problem solver, thrive off a challenge and enjoy finding tangible solutions to complex situations, which led me to a career in Engineering. My interest in climate change and creating a sustainable future led me to study for a BEng in Sustainable Engineering, going on to complete a MSc in Sustainable Manufacturing.

My career started working in the renewables industry, undertaking technical design and documentation for renewable energy systems, and progressing to an operations manager running numerous projects across the country. I then spent 5 years as an Energy Manager for a large NHS Trust, working on projects to upgrade their infrastructure with energy-efficient technology and managing the energy for the portfolio of clinical and non-clinical sites.

How did you join and develop within Optimised?

I started my journey with Optimised in 2017 as an Energy Solutions Engineer after seeing a post on LinkedIn. The role was varied and involved auditing client sites, looking for potential energy savings projects, and creating business cases to support the ROI. I then developed into the role of a Section Head – Energy Engineering, managing the team of engineers undertaking energy audits and feasibility studies for clients, as it became apparent that my skills are well suited to people management, client interactions, and the management of contracts and associated projects.

In 2022, I was given the opportunity to apply for an internal position as the Director of Consulting, something which was always on my career path, but further down my timeline. However, with the support of my colleagues, and family, I was encouraged to apply for the position and was successful. Since taking the position, it has proven to be the challenge I expected it to be, but I am thoroughly enjoying it as I have a great support network around me and love the variety in the role.

Optimised is full of motivational people, who inspire me to do my best so that we can deliver our services and support our clients' needs.

What advice can you give girls curious about science?

Go with it, be curious and challenge the scenarios. When I was studying, the terms ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Net Zero’ were uncommon and nobody knew what they meant. The job of your future may not exist yet, but work hard, be adaptive and you will succeed.

It is a naturally male-dominated environment, but use this to your advantage, and make yourself stand out from the crowd!

Next, we caught up with Helena Glover, who initially joined Optimised in 2022 as Marketing Intern, before discovering her passion for sustainability.

Helena enjoyed the various sciences at school, which led to her studying linguistics as a softer science. Helena felt she couldn’t aspire for a role in sustainability without harder science skills, which led her down the marketing route.

As a marketer, her linguistics expertise saw her tasked with writing the internal sustainability report, which naturally allowed her to gain more knowledge on the topic. Helena made such an outstanding job on the Impact Report (which is available to view on our Sustainability page), she was offered the role of Junior Sustainability Consultant.

Now a year into her role, she looks after external sustainability for  clients, as well as internal sustainability goals for Optimised. Helena offered some great advice.

If you’re passionate and willing to learn, the scientific field is for you. Optimised encourages and offers paths to learn more and grow continuously.

We also spoke with Nicola Moffat, who joined Optimised in 2021 as an Energy & Carbon Analyst within our Bureau. Nicky spoke about her inspiration from working in a team full of successful women.

It’s really great working for a company where so many women are “succeeding” – all of the senior roles in my team are taken by women and it gives me the assurance that I can succeed within Optimised too.

Energy wasn’t an industry I saw myself ending up in, and whilst I didn’t know it when I applied for my role, having so many women around has probably made a really big difference and fills me with the confidence I need to put myself out there to be the best Energy and Carbon Analyst I can!

Yet another woman recently joined Optimised, Linnea Hopkins, to lead the marketing team. She is excited to engage and empower even more businesses to decarbonise, and take bold steps in the journey to Net Zero.

At Optimised, we welcome and embrace all backgrounds and disciplines, encouraging equality within the STEM fields, and breaking the male bias. We have a few vacancies for roles in science, technology, engineering & mathematics, and would love to see more women join the team and excel!
