Why We Go Beyond - Celebrating B Corp Month 2023

At Optimised, we go beyond a focus on profit to ensure that our operations benefit our employees, communities, and the planet. We believe that it is imperative to adopt a triple bottom line approach to ensure long-term value, boost wellbeing and protect the environment in the midst of the climate crisis.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has stated that it is essential we limit global warming to “well below” a 2°C, preferably under a 1.5°C, increase from pre-industrial temperatures. If we overshoot this temperature goal, we risk setting off a chain of irreversible and catastrophic climate-related disasters, such as extreme heat, precipitation, and drought. These climate events will impact health, food security, water supply, livelihoods and economic growth. In 2023, we have already reached an average global increase of 1.2°C and are increasingly witnessing extreme climate events around the world, such as the deep freezes in the US, the extreme flooding in Pakistan, and the deadly droughts across Europe.

Climate change is and will continue to impact everyone, although developing countries and low-lying islands are most vulnerable. Limiting global temperatures is therefore a collaborative effort that needs to be addressed immediately to mitigate the imminent risks. That’s why we prioritise both our internal and external environmental impact. This means measuring, monitoring, and reducing our carbon emissions, sending zero waste to landfill, aiming to be paperless by 2025 and procuring 100% renewable energy for offices under our operational control. Our company vision is to deliver environmental and economic sustainability simultaneously for our clients. This involves providing energy and carbon saving opportunities through consulting, managed services, and engineering solutions in order to get businesses on track for net zero.

But sustainability isn’t all about the environment. We make sure we also put our people first by protecting their wellbeing and offering a generous benefits package, which includes health and life insurance, hybrid working, an electric vehicle scheme and a professional development allowance. We also organise regular team activities, volunteering opportunities and an exciting annual conference to encourage team building and life-long friendships. We’ve recently set up an internal wellbeing committee to monitor and address issues raised by our employees and make Optimised the best place possible to work. Each of our offices also has at least one dedicated Mental Health First Aider, who offers confidential support when needed. Everyone should look forward to coming in on a Monday morning, and that’s what we strive for.

We strive to create a positive impact in the communities we operate in by aiming to source goods and services locally, regularly offering internships, providing our employees with a day’s paid volunteering leave each year, and partnering with local charities to offer help where we can. In Bristol for example, we have recently partnered with InHope to offer work experience to those who have struggled with homelessness and addiction.

But we’re not getting complacent!

We believe that this is a great start, but we are planning on going beyond by pushing for continual improvement. We’ve set ourselves ambitious targets aligned with B Corp values and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
