ABOUT KEOLISAMEY DOCKLANDS
KeolisAmey Docklands, a joint venture between Keolis and Amey, was awarded the franchise to manage the Dockland Light Railway (DLR) in December 2014. The focus of the franchise is to operate and maintain the network (including 45 stations and over 40km of track), implement service improvements to make journeys better for passengers and ensure the DLR remains one of the best performing railways in the UK.
Climate change presents an enormous challenge for London’s transport infrastructure which is fundamental to daily life and already faces climate-related challenges, including flooding, heat, and erosion. Given the vital role that KeolisAmey Docklands plays in supporting the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), carrying over 120 million passengers a year, they decided to take action and consulted Optimised to support the development of a new climate and sustainability strategy.

REINFORCING THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT
Since 2015, KeolisAmey Docklands have made significant progress in reducing their environmental impact, including reducing annual water consumption by 20%, reducing annual emissions of Nitrous Oxide and PM10 by 10% and achieving zero waste-to-landfill. However, KeolisAmey wanted to go further by strengthening their commitment to tackle climate change, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and driving positive transformation of the DLR estate.
KeolisAmey Docklands required a strategy that aligned with the needs of key stakeholders, including Transport for London (TFL), DLR passengers and local communities, as well as a commitment that demonstrated industry leadership on tackling climate change and an implementation plan mobilising employees to drive the agenda forwards.
Solution
IMPROVING CARBON IMPACT WITH EXPERT NET ZERO GUIDANCE
To meet these requirements, Optimised provided tailored Net Zero solutions, including:
results
on-site solar and wind generation
Optimised produced a comprehensive strategy report, supported by detailed evidence and analysis which addressed business priorities, stakeholder inputs and the risks and opportunities that climate change poses to KeolisAmey Docklands. Short, medium and long-term targets were defined across a range of areas including climate adaptation, net zero, air pollution, waste management, biodiversity, water conservation and being a good neighbour.
An ambitious target was set to reach net zero ‘operational emissions’ by 2025 and measure and reduce scope 3 emissions, along with a commitment to achieve a science-based net zero target by 2030. Optimised then created a decarbonisation roadmap, with an emissions reduction pathway and action plan including fully costed decarbonisation initiatives such as green gas, solar PV and EV charging solutions, with any residual emissions being offset through a range of technology and nature-based solutions projects.
Finally, a ‘Climate Action Team’ was established, led by senior management to deliver employee engagement, with a training plan to embed the climate and sustainability strategy into company culture.
Optimised were able to quickly understand our key stakeholder’s requirements and worked seamlessly with our internal teams to deliver a comprehensive and action focused strategy that the wider organisation can get behind.
