  • Gain qualifications
  • Improve employability
  • Help towards your career
  • Gain independence

Charlie joins us as a Data Technical Apprentice. We interviewed him to give more of an insight into his role here at Optimised.

1.        What’s your role and responsibilities at Optimised?

My main responsibilities are to monitor and troubleshoot data flows across the organisation. I am to ensure that up to date datasets are available for all clients and internal teams without interruption.

2.      What attracted you to Optimised?

It looked like a great opportunity to enter an interesting sector of technology. The job role sounded important, and the company has a goal that I can align myself with. I love a learning opportunity and anything to develop myself professionally and personally.

3.      What does a typical day look like for you?

Currently, I am still learning so I am working very closely with Tom Hewish. We have a dedicated period of time every day where we go through tickets and other resources to teach me as much as possible and get me up to speed. The rest of the day, Tom and I go through any other important tasks that need to be completed which allows me to see other parts of the business while learning other valuable knowledge that could only help in the future.

4.      What do you like most about the work that you do?

I enjoy a good puzzle. Obviously being a newbie, I’m having to currently check things a lot, I’m asking many questions and still learning the process. However, I look forward to the days where I am able to see something myself and work it all out without so much assistance.

5.      What do you do to be sustainable in the workplace?

Rather than driving I take the train and walk to the office. The weather in can make this … refreshing at times.

6.     If you could learn one new professional skill, what would it be?

I would love to learn to code. I have dabbled with Python in particular. Learning more about data and software as a whole is an incredibly interesting area of expertise that I hope one day I could experience.

7.      What is your personal mantra?

PMA – Positive Mental Attitude. No matter how things are, try to stay positive about the situation. I often appoint myself in charge of morale!

8.     What motivates you at work?

I like to produce good work. I want to learn everything I can and to get to that point where people look to me for advice. The opportunity for professional growth is always an aim of mine. If I give effort to something, I believe I should get something back. For the ‘something back’, I am happy for this to include more training courses, development opportunities and responsibilities.

9.     Do you speak more than one language?

Not at all. Although currently living in Wales I have picked up a couple important things …

Dim parcio = No parking

Araf = slow

10.  What moment are you the proudest of?

I would say I am proud of where I am in life despite having gone through the challenges I have done. I have learnt a lot of skills throughout my professional during and I have developed as a person.

11.     Who is your hero?

In all honesty I don’t really have a hero / idol like others might. However, with regards to Optimised then Tom Hewish. He is a true workhorse of the company. I’ve seen how much effort he puts into his work and how many responsibilities he has and yet he still is finding the time to help me develop. He’s a good lad and I can only hope that one day I am as good as him at my job!

12.   What are some fun facts about you?

I can Ballroom and Latin dance and my family own a dancing school; Minnie Skerrett School of Dancing. Both my parents are/were dancers so I started as a child with tap dancing and progressed to ballroom and Latin and continued that into my teen years. (See next page for the photo of me in my frog outfit from a show I was in as a child). I also played guitar for about 14 years.
